Manager on training
After 9 months of doing my new job as a coach and a short
time of just being away from the field as a player, there have been a lot of
questions rising on my mind. For example, do I really have what it takes to be
a manager? Are you willing to sacrifice your time to put all you have into a
manager career? Are you going to be able to argue with players, coaches,
umpires, fans, teams, etc and try to get your point across their heads? You bet
your ass I will.
Obviously preparation is a big key of any process and I
thought that just retiring last year I was going to be ready for that
challenge, but now sitting on the other side you can really see how big of a
responsibility being a manager could be. I had the opportunity to manage couple
of games this year and sure it was fun but it goes way further than that.
I really believe that you have to be more than a
communicator and act almost like a psychologist. Your responses have to be
clear and right to the point, quick minded and witty, but over anything true to
yourself and true to your team. Whatever your message will be you will have to
become, and of course everybody from the batboy all the way up to the GM and
the owner, will have to stay on the same page, with one mission and one belief.
I have been fortunate to be in this game for a long time and
being across some great managers. I’ve learned so many things from all of them.
Everybody got their own way of thinking and of course their own personalities,
if I didn’t catch their messages I would have been wasting my time. Their leadership
and commitment had really made an impact on me, not only as a player but also
as a human being, teaching me things that have really helped me personally. I
think this is what is all about, that you can become a man applying this rules
and habits not only on the baseball field, but also in your own life.
Very soon I will be working with the team that opened the
doors for me as a professional in my hometown, and that should be a very
interesting chapter on this challenging process in order to achieve a level of
comfort on this goal to become a manager someday.
He
camino hacia esa meta.
